Heidi’s surgery went wonderfully. She came out of recover yesturday afternoon and was pretty out of it. Last night was long, neither of us got any sleep, but the nurse on duty was wonderful. She was in our room often to check up on Heidi and make sure she was comfortable.
This morning was a roller coaster. Heidi hadn’t eaten anything for more than 24 hours and needed to use the restroom. The nurse helped her into the bathroom and as Heidi was standing up to come back to bed, she fainted. The nurse shouted, “a little HELP!”. I ran into the bathroom to help the nurse keep Heidi upright. A few other nurses ran in and helped us lower her gently on the floor. they checked her bp and oxygen. She was super weak. We got her back to the bed, and everything was ok, for a bit. A short time later, she asked me to help her sit up. As soon as she sat up, she started vomiting. Generally, I have a weak constitution for gore. This was gore. Apparently, swallowing a large quantity of blood during jaw surgery is normal. This was a large quantity. I freaked out and ran out to the nurses station like a maniac. It looked like someone had been slaughtered in her bed. A team of nurses cleaned her up and changed the bed like it nascar pit crew. It was amazing. After that she felt lie a million bucks.
This evening, Heidi’s surgeon, Doctor Masters came by to check up on her. He took off her bandages and checked her sense of touch in her face. He was very pleased that she has full feeling in her lips and mouth. That’s a very good sign! He’s an amazing surgeon and we were blessed to have his skilled hands performing her surgery.
Friends and family have been so supportive through all of this. Doug, Marti and my mom Susan spent yesturday afternoon with me here at the hospital and came in to see Heidi after the surgery. The staff have been so wonderful, all through the night they were here to check up on Heidi. Today, Marti, Doug, Hillary, Nathan, Lacy, Sydney and Aunt Louise all came to spend time with Heidi. It was much appreciated. Heidi loves the flowers from the Bazzill Babes. She has them sitting on her bed tray. They’re gorgeous.
Again, we appreciate all your thoughts and prayers. We’ve really been blessed. I know I’ve been blessed with a wonderful wife and best friend who’s companionship I’ll never fully live up to. Heidi’s amazing, so brave and so quick to look on the bright side. She can’t help but give everyone the ok sign and thumbs up when the ask her how she’s doing.
I’ll post a few pictures after we take Heidi home tomorrow.
Paul
